Scouts Tours

Although the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center doesn’t specifically offer sanctioned scouting “badges” at this time, we do provide educational experiences that can help fulfill the requirements needed to earn many scouting badges & ranks.

Most programs last approximately 60 minutes depending on the audience & age group, & should be scheduled at least one week in advance.

All groups of ten or more are offered the discounted special group rate of $2 per child & $5 per adult. The facility is located just west of the Great Platte River Road Archway at 2434 East 1st Street, Kearney, Nebraska. For more information, contact Museum Director Lindsay Schluntz, at: 308-338-FIRE(3473) or at Mail@NEFFM.org.

10. Collecting and Other Hobbies

Come see our collection! We have an extensive toy fire truck collection & arrangements may be made for the group to talk with the donor of the toy collection. We’ve got lots of neat things from across the state that we’ve collected: fire engines, fire extinguishers, hundreds of toy trucks, and we’re starting a new collection of fire department patches!

28. Smoke Detectors

We have a “hazard house” section with over 30 fire hazards, including a faulty smoke detector. We discuss the importance of and proper maintenance of these important pieces of fire safety equipment.

6. Start a collection

a. Complete the Character Connection for Positive Attitude.

• Know – Discuss with your family how a cheerful and positive attitude will help you do your best at school and in other areas of your life.

• Commit – Discuss with your family how gathering items for a collection may be difficult. How does a hopeful and cheerful attitude help you to keep looking for more items. Why is a positive attitude important?

• Practice – Practice having a positive attitude while doing the requirements for “Start a Collection.”

b. Make a collection of anything you like. Start with 10 things. Put them together in a neat way.

c. Show and explain your collection to another person.

10. Family Fun

a. Complete the Character Connection for Cooperation.

• Know – Discuss these questions with your family: What is “cooperation”? Why do people need to cooperate when they are doing things together? Name some ways that you can be helpful and cooperate with others.

• Commit – Discuss with your family what makes it hard to cooperate. How do listening, sharing, and persuading help us cooperate?

• Practice – Practice being cooperative while doing the requirements for “Family Fun.”

Cooperation is a huge component in effective firefighting. We practice cooperation when doing the bucket brigade activity, life net activity(seasonal) and practicing pumping our 19th century fire apparatus. Plus, listening and sharing are two of the simple rules that we have at the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center.

c. Plan a walk. Go to a park or a wooded area, or visit a zoo or museum with your family.

3. What makes America Special?

b. With the help of your family or den leader, find out about two famous Americans. Tell the things they did or are doing to improve our way of life.

Did you know that Ben Franklin formed the first volunteer fire company in America? And that over 70% of all fire departments in America are still volunteer organizations? Come visit the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center and we can tell you all about it!

j. Complete the Character Connection for Citizenship.

• Know – Tell ways some people in the past have served our country. Tell about some people who serve our country today. (Don’t forget about “ordinary” people who serve our country.)

• Commit – Tell something that might happen to you and your family if other people were not responsible citizens. Tell one thing you will do to be a good citizen.

• Practice – Tell three things you did in one week that show you are a good citizen.

What if nobody fought the fires in Nebraska? What if Nebraskans weren’t responsible with fires and didn’t work to prevent fires today? Did you know that YOU play an important role in being a good citizen by preventing fires?

8. The Past is Exciting and Important

e. Find out some history about your community.

A 40-foot timeline at the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center details the development of fire departments across the state and tells of many of the epic fires in the state! Come find your community on the timeline, in photographs and in artifact exhibits!
